My name is Lisa Rough and I am a self-taught artist living in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina with my partner and two children (along with a few critters). I have been an artist virtually my whole life, with family roots woven strongly within music, theater, and visual arts. It was seven years ago when I wandered into the local craft shop and on a whim, bought a cheap woodburning pen. I experimented on whatever I could find, beginning with an unfinished wooden bookcase I had. I was immediately tantalized by the sweet smell of the smoke, (which reminded me of campfires), and the steady rhythm of using the pen.

My tools and my style have evolved greatly since then, and now most of my work is done on solid pieces of wood that hang on the wall, although occassionally I will be commissioned to work on unfinished furniture and onsite jobs such as cabinets and doors. The intrinsic narrative nature of my work has also led me to begin using several pieces for illustrating children's stories. Several projects are in the works!
Each piece that I create is one-of-a-kind, and each one has its own story. Pyrography is often a slow and meditative process, allowing me to create from what I believe to be sacred space. Reflected within my work are strong connections to nature and to the divine feminine, providing an imaginative approach to weaving together art and spirit in whimsical, touching, and often healing ways. I welcome you to really take a close look and relate to it in your own unique way, inspiring your own stories to surface.
My work can be seen in several online galleries and in private collections all over the country. I am also a member of the following organizations...
